Somebody was shaking him. His vision clearing a bit, James opened his eyes to see the doctor by his side.
“Are you okay”, she asked.
Unable to form a single coherent sentence in his mind, James stood up and went to Tracy. He hadn’t imagined it. There they were. A boy and girl!! Twins! Not even in his wildest imagination had he thought, while arguing with Tracy whether the baby was a boy or a girl, that he would be blessed with twins. He looked in wonder at those bundles of soft mush, all red and sleeping by their mother’s side. They look so tiny and fragile. he thought, afraid of picking them up lest he cause any harm.
His attention went to Tracy, to find her looking at him and smiling. She reassured him silently, that it would be okay. He gave a light kiss on her forehead, wishing this moment of perfect happiness could go on forever and ever. Then very slowly, he picked up the boy.
“How are you junior Thomas”, he cooed, looking up to Tracy hearing a soft chuckle escape from her. He looked at her questioningly.
“I can see who is going to be your favourite” she teased him, seeing he had picked up the boy first.
James smiled too. How he wished he could capture this moment, he thought, heart filling up to the brim with happiness.
“Are you okay sweetheart” he asked Tracy, seeing her tired and going into sleep again.
“She has had a hard labour because of the twins and needs more rest” the doc said. “You don’t worry, we will take care of her and the babies”.
Just then both of them heard a soft cry and turned. The baby girl was up and she seemed to sense that she had not been picked up by daddy.
“Fighting for equal rights from now sweetheart” James said, chuckling as he put the boy down and picked up his girl. “I can see you are going to be as tough as your mama.”
Spending some time with them, James left the clinic, thinking to call Mark and tell him about the good news. He ringed to their house, but instead of Mark or Marie, Jimmy (their helper boy) picked up the phone and told him that both of them had gone to see the new house.
James stood their, stunned to his core, as he understood in a flash what had happened.
What happens now….
